The most commonly used phonetic alphabet today is that adopted by NATO in the mid 1950’s, approved by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, the U.S. It is also known as the Alpha Bravo Charlie or the alpha bravo alphabet.
A spelling alphabet is used to spell parts of a message containing letters and numbers to avoid confusion because many letters sound similar, for instance, “n” and “m” or “b” and “d”; the potential for confusion increases if static or other interference is present.
Phonetic Alphabet Tables are useful for spelling words and names over the phone.
